Yeh Saali Zindagi Movie 20110 Comments

A while ago, while chatting to him for my show on TV, I had questioned Sudhir Mishra, why not a Hindi movie industry to produce quality films, in contrast to the years 1960 and 1970 that have tremendous recall value, even in the today? I remember clearly, Mishra not blink an eyelid when answering this: “That’s because most producers are not literate enough to scripts that could raise the standards of Hindi films to understand film making for them is limited to weekends business these days.. “The proclamation was with me!

When you saunter into a cinema complex on a Sudhir Mishra film to watch, is the fact that this maverick filmmaker will serve you non-stereotypical things. As a viewer, I found some of his efforts [IS subah nahin Raat KI, HAZAARON KHWAISHEIN AISI], but a couple not to live up to my expectations. His new movie, yeh zindagi saali, has been the buzz for a variety of reasons. It’s ‘controversial’ or ‘provocative’ title is the key.

Before I continue, let me tell you that the title is of immense significance for the film. Sure, it may sound offensive [to the Chief Censor Board raised a hue and cry, asking Mishra for the title of the film to change], but why a popular word ['saali'] creating a riot? Actually I am quite amused at the fuss. In our society, we refer to the sister-in-law as saali, right? Besides, nearly three decades ago, the Dilip Kumar starrer Sagina had a very popular song [we remember these days], “Saala Main to Sahab Ban Gaya ‘and more recently,’ Pappu Can not Dance Saala ‘from jaane TU YA NA jaane took the nation by storm. Recently, the word “saali” was used in a song NO ONE SLAIN JESSICA “Re Aali Re saali. Even if you YEH saali Zindagi view, you realize that ‘saali’ was used as a symbol to the vagaries of life and not as a derogatory, offensive swear words. It is not jargon, but a flare-up of expression.

It requires a fearless and courageous filmmaker [Prakash Jha] to back an audacious film-maker [Sudhir Mishra] to a motion picture that defies stereotype created. the risk is huge, but the satisfaction of having created a product that has tremendous shelf life is incalculable. YEH saali Zindagi is a striking example.

In an industry where mediocre scripts rule and resources are available for projects only as marketable stars’ are ready to sign on the dotted line, in an industry where proven formula and shortcuts have become a habit, yeh saali Zindagi comes as a courageous attempt . It can not be that serious independent filmmaker’s most accomplished effort, but it has the guts and the courage to tell a story with an innovative new approach.

At the same time, I would add that the content is unique, the ratios shown in the film are complex and twisted and format of telling the story [including the pattern of change] is a long way from what one is accustomed to looking at the usual Hindi film. Even the language is hard, rough, with lots of expletives and insults thrown in. But that’s the beauty of this film. It is a different path.

Last word? Sudhir Mishra is back in shape. You have a strong stomach to stomach this one!

Arun [Irrfan Khan] has to save Priti [Chitrangda Singh], the woman he loves, but first he must rescue the man Priti loves Shyam [Vipul Gupta], the future son-in-law of a powerful minister. Meanwhile, time is running out for Kuldeep [Arunoday Singh], the young gangster on his last job as his wife [Aditi Rao Hydari] threatens to walk out on him and he begins to suspect that she has left him to go into the arms of another man.

The task is confused because it is still unknown that the Kuldeep minister’s daughter’s engagement with Shyam is off and now she does not care if Shyam lives or dies, and more importantly, just as the minister hoped Kuldeep that the ransom. Priti finds himself inextricably caught in this mess and Arun has to save her life. But he has to risk everything and his life put at stake, he wonders why he would do it at all, if she still loves another man. He is torn, but love knows no reason.

Sudhir Mishra has worked on a tight scenario to ensure that at no point in that 2 hours monotony sets in. Several stories have been run, but unlike other films, these stories are linked to the very conclusion. There are plenty of twists and shocks that come periodically scare you because they do not meet the established blueprint that most Hindi films follow.

But the film is not without blemishes. A, Mishra should have ensured that the story unfolded in the most simplistic way, because there are sequences that behind questions about as difficult to understand. Since the film has too many characters and too many incidents taking place in the course of a few days, treatment had to be simplistic, without confusing the viewer, who sit on the fence and the supervision of the procedure. Also, the inconsistent pacing is a deterrent. Besides, you can find sequences that just add to the duration and do not have much significance to the main plot whatsoever.

The climax was met with mixed reactions, especially the “bullet” sequence. It would have worked big time in a Manmohan Desai film, but in light of the fact that Sudhir Mishra is the realistic path, it’s a bit hard to absorb. Still, it’s a brilliant way to end the movie!

The soundtrack of YEH saali Zindagi wearing a different sound, especially the title track. Sachin Krishn’s cinematography is perfect [the premises of Delhi and its suburbs well caught], but the only problem is that most of the recordings are poorly lit, which may not be a problem in urban compositions with good projection systems, but would raise certainly a problem in smaller cities. Something even Vishal Bhardwaj had agreed with my position in Kaminey. Dialogue [Mishra and Rishi Manu], as I mentioned earlier, his right from everyday conversation. The HOI Polloi in particular would benefit from the curse words that are generously interwoven in the story. Is electrifying background score and editing [most parts] the ins and outs of high-impact.

YEH saali Zindagi is decorated with talented actors and as always, Irrfan is leading the pack with an outstanding performance, keeps your attention from the very beginning. He is aggressive, if necessary, [with Saurabh Shukla], but meekly in handling matters of the heart [Chitrangda Singh]. Chitrangda looks great and the matches for Irrfan in most parts. In fact, her screen persona is so strong you can not get your eyes off this lady.

Arunoday continues to climb the ladder with every film. The youngster shines in his role and is distinguished not only for his towering personality, but also because he is a completely natural. Aditi Rao Hydari is very good. Saurabh Shukla is an accomplished actor and he proves it yet again. Sushant Singh is first class, Vipin Sharma is the most convincing, Yashpal Sharma and Prashant Narayanan is remarkable is excellent as always. Vipul Gupta is another talent to watch.

Overall, yeh zindagi saali is a striking example of new age film. A film with a bold new approach, it is impulsive and dealing with capable leadership and power-packed performance as his strengths. This is a more solid attempt that the graph of the Hindi film takes to a higher level.
