This is something I do not understand. Why have interesting ideas or concepts do not translate a page into a fascinating and exciting scenario? I can list a number of films that boasted remarkable stories, but the excitement disappears when you look at the reels unfold. VIKALP directed by Sachin P. Karande, suffers for this reason.

The Australian mini-series Bangkok Hilton [1989] is fresh to this date. In Bollywood, the most famous interpretation of the mini-series continues GUMRAH [Sridevi, Sanjay Dutt]. VIKALP not really borrow from Bangkok Hilton, but you can draw parallels with the plot. Besides, VIKALP also talks of hacking and terrorism, so that makes it all more interesting.

So what’s the problem? Well, the author seems clueless when it comes to doing justice to the subject matter. What would have been a neat edge-of-the-seat thriller is a tame, boring and amateurish attempt in his last roles. In fact, the sequences leading to the finals and the conclusion of the movie throwing a spanner in the works.

Rishika Gandhi [Deepal Shaw], a docile, middle-class girl from an orphanage, is a sort of prodigy in the field of computer education. She works in an IT company in Mumbai. Some Goof happening and she resigned from her job. At the same time, her personal life also gets a shock of blue as her boyfriend’s family accused her of using their son to search for financial security. Humiliated and heart-broken, Rishika decides to leave India and take the offer of a Bangkok-based software company.

In Bangkok, Rishika gradually realizes that she is caught in a network of online criminals and is used as a hacker. Her passport is also with the company so that they can not really escape. She gets a false identity of a criminal and has nothing and nobody on her side to prove they Rishika Gandhi.

I sincerely feel that director Sacha P. Karande knows his job well. Whether or VIKALP PAYBACK, his choice of subject is really interesting. But, for some reason, he is letdown by his writers. In fact the first half of VIKALP has several compelling moments [when facing the first sequences], who skillfully performed, but the way the scenario unfolds in the post-interval portions, really heartbreaking. A fascinating idea is used in a sloppy fashion, that’s where the fault lies.

Another reason that goes against the film is making its sticky. Although the exterior shot in Bangkok, the interior have been filmed on location tacky. Speaking of songs [music: Dev Sikdar and Vijay Narayan], the film has a great soundtrack, but the two numbers in the post-interval forced parts appear in the story.

Deepal Shaw gets into the skin of the character. She’s awkward in a few sequences in the first instance, but will have the right later. Akshay Singh is quite good, although his role is not well developed. Kranti Prakash Jha is a revelation. The actor surprises you with a great performance. Chetan Pandit is convincing. Nirmal Pandey is wasted. Ditto for Alok Nath. Abhijeet Lahiri effective. Pankaj Berry is good. The actress determining the role of Suzy’s okay.

Overall, VIKALP is an interesting idea gone wrong.
