A wise man once said. “The only time you really live fully 30 to 60, the young slaves aspirations and ambitions, while his old servants of regrets, only the middle-aged have all their five senses in the keeping. Their minds.” Despite this some people fear of aging or in this case, turning 30 …

Why does give people turning 30 in particular women, nightmares? Maybe it has to do with the supposed “terrible” things that come with age [30]. The skin begins the age when the fading glow begins, the density and firmness of the skin missing. Besides the physical changes, many people enjoy self-assessment. In fact, I know a lot of people still cling to their 20s even though they are in their 30s. Unfortunately, nobody wants to age …

So turning 30! India’s answer to Bridget Jones’s Diary? Or is the 13 Going On 30? Of Sex & the City? The promo can identify you think it a rip off of the diary of Bridget Jones’s cult classic, but it is not. The fact that drove me to think that the way was the reason that both are women-centric films that highlight the plight of a woman, especially when it comes to two men in her life.

Come to think of it, TURN 30! is a very urban phenomenon. By the time an urban woman turns 30, she wants to be settled in her life, relationship, marriage or career-wise. She is also happy to have children as her biological clock ticking. Women in the villages and towns do not really identify with this phenomenon, because by the time they are 30, they are married with several children.

TURN 30! is a slice of life film. Debutante director Alankrita Shrivastava chooses to focus on a working woman living in a metropolis, how despondent she feels like a relationship fails, its dangers, the hardships and how she eventually rediscovers herself on her 31st birthday. In the popular mainstream cinema in India, there is little room for regular working women in their early 30s. Their lives, especially how you handle relationships, was rarely portrayed on celluloid. In that respect, TURN 30! is a first.

TURN 30! has much energy and humor as his aces. I feel, many of the urban, working, young people will identify with different scenes from the movie, because it comes across as a slice of life movie. Also Gul’s character in the film faces a number of urban problems that independent women in general face and therefore identification with her character would be enormous. But the problem with the film is that it loses its post-interval portions. The scenario, all of a sudden, it appears stereotyped after making you believe in the first hour it was a real, bona fide story. Simply put, it’s the formulaic component that robs the shine off this film. Alankrita had beaten his actual [as in the first hour], TURN 30! would have been a far more convincing and persuasive effort than it is in its present form.

Last word? Mixed feelings, honest. The first half works, the second is long, the story stagnates and the ins and outs to turn formulaic. A great idea, unfortunately, did not translate into a great film.

TURN 30! is Naina’s [Gul Panag] story as she struggles with heartbreak and a crisis in her advertising career in the face of her 30th birthday. And when she fights her fears and anxieties about the fact that 30 years old, Naina realizes that a lot of growing up to be done.

Post DIL Chahta Hai, many many filmmakers were inspired films depicting male bonding it. But chick flicks, as they are colloquially known, are a rarity in Bollywood. Especially with regard to female characters or designed to appeal to the mostly female audience [Aisha was designed to appeal to young women in general]. However, TURN 30! is different in tone and content. It is very factual in nature. The relationships – between three girls and also between Gul and her friend Sid Makkar – come across as legitimate and authentic. The clever use of humor in the story, in particular the first hour, makes it even more.

But as I pointed out in advance, writes Alankrita lacks the coherence of the first half in its post-interval portions. Actually, the story comes to a halt in this hour. Plus, the entire episode of Gul penning a book based on her memoirs and her colleagues dragging it to the court seems very formula-driven and not attractive. Even her ex-boyfriend [Sid Makkar] is desperate to return to her – it looks strange and fake. The lesbian song is wrong. It is extended without much cause.

One would expect that turning 30! a song less film, but there are too many songs here. Even otherwise, the soundtrack by Siddharth-Suhas is strictly okay.

Gul Panag delivers an elegant performance. She expresses the varied emotions so well and literally grab the film from the word go. In fact, its refined performance stays with you even after the movie wraps up. Purab Kohli is doing very well. Sid Makkar gives a good account of themselves. The two friends – played by Tillotama Shomen [as Malini] and Jeneva Talwar [as Ruksana] – are perfect. Satya Deep Misra gets minimal scope. Ira Dubey is good in a short role. Anita Kanwar [Gul as mother] sees her share. Rahul Singh is okay. Sameer Malhotra is honest, while Bikramjeet Kanwarpal doing well.

Overall, TURN 30! has its moments, but they are few and far between. In totality, however, misses the mark.
