Some intriguing stories. And if they happen to borrow from real life, the curiosity to watch the film only improves considerably. More so if the story of the stormy and tumultuous relationship between a wily politician who aspires to be a Chief Minister of North India and is a political journalist who strives to achieve the star status in her area. Now add the love, lust, conspiracy, fraud, deceit and murder of the story and what emerges is a piece of work that is separate from the stories we are accustomed to look on the Hindi screen.

Come to think of the trend of female actors essaying the part of a journalist on the Hindi screen is not new. Right from Sridevi [MR INDIA] to Dimple Kapadia [KRANTIVEER] to Juhi Chawla [Hindustani Phir BHI DIL HAI] to Preity Zinta [Lakshya] to Konkona Sen Sharma [PAGE 3] to Deepal Shaw [Wednesday] to Kangna Ranaut [Knock Out] Rani Mukerji recently to [NO ONE SLAIN JESSICA], the fearless person is a witness in a variety of media Avtar. But the part Divya Dutta portrays MONICA is a tad different than the above.

MONICA is not just about a media person, but also looks at the various roles she portrayed in her life – wife of an alcoholic, mother of an illegitimate child, a go-getter, ambitious woman who “has access to the pants a powerful politician, “[that is a dialogue from the movie] and, finally, a woman afraid for her life … How she gets caught in a vicious game of murky politics, is a fugitive, in addition to a mental wreck before she was murdered, the story is smoking hot. In fact, the film illustrates the aspirations not only limited to men, even women can be ambitious.

Probably looking for inspiration from real life scams and controversies, Monica shows the transformation of a small town school girl, a victim of child abuse while watching a film [Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak] in a theater in Lucknow, a media person with thick skin , who has no problem sleeping with a powerful politician a lady’s industrial goals. The various episodes in her stormy life told in a rather unusual way of director Sush Bhatnagar. Of course a few essential pieces missing, but the story keeps you hooked for most items.

Lucknow – the city where she lived and returned to die. Very early in her life, Monica [Divya Dutta] had shown that there are only two categories of people: the exploiter and the exploited. But Monica was not ready to heel. She was willing to exchange. She married Raj Jaitley [Rajit Kapoor] for the love. They persuaded Ray Aseem [Tinnu Anand] for the position. She seduces Pamela Garewal [Kittu Gidwani] for power. She surrendered to Chandrakant Pandit [Ashutosh Rana] for all this and more. But did Monica get what they deserve?

Director Bhatnagar Sush not really follow the conventional way of telling the story. He goes back and forth, peeking in Monica’s life through a lawyer [Yashpal Sharma] in the courtroom. This means, must be very, very attentive and when it comes to observing what actually appeared in her life to warn. Deftly handled brilliantly written and performed with different sequences, Sush handles the subject with extreme sincerity and devotion. The courtroom scenes in particular are skillful performed.

But, as I said in the beginning, the film stumbles in a few places. A solid reason that caused a rupture between Ashutosh Rana and Divya Dutta is clearly lacking. They were not attached to each other, so how come they enemies all of a sudden sworn? That vital link is just not there. Besides, by Sush’s execution of the subject is first rate, the numerous flashbacks drop you off after a point. A linear, simplified way of telling the story would only have enhanced the overall impact.

Besides useful direction, I would like to point out two sections where this movie scores. Chandan Goswami’s cinematography is top notch. The frames are beautiful and not only the beauty of Nainital, but the beauty of Lucknow are skillfully captured on celluloid. The lines written – the dialogue [Sush Bhatnagar] – be very sharp. Especially at the time of Yateen Karyekar and Divya Dutta have a heated discussion. It is horrifying! The background score [Raju Rao] is good.

When powerful actors like Ashutosh Rana and Divya Dutta cast, you expect nothing but the best. Ashutosh brings a lot through his eyes. He is as cool as cucumber, even in the toughest situations, that is the hallmark of a really fine actor. Divya adds another fine performance for its rich repertoire. Her makeover is worth mention, but more than styling, it is her performance and the varied emotions they stay talking with you much after the screening ended. I genuinely believe that the sector has the potential of both Ashutosh and Divya tapped.

Rajit Kapoor, a talented but name, is surprisingly theatrical this time. He not only looks convincing. The supporting cast lends admirable support. Dadhi Pandey, Ashutosh Rana and confidant, is excellent. Tinnu Anand is in perfect sync with his character. Kittu Gidwani is just right. Yashpal Sharma delivers another superb performance. Kunika doing very well. Yateen Karyekar is admirable. [Ashutosh Rana rival politician's] Saurabh Dubey is beautiful. Ashish Kapoor [the killer] leaves an impression in a short role.

Overall MONICA may miss the bus for two reasons – the lack of face-value and almost zero hype. One can not ignore the fact that a well-made film that does justice to the plot. It is a film that valuation experts should find the film. Give this film a chance, it will surprise you!
