Maria Belal is an ambitious young Pakistani designer with vision. A graduate of the Pakistan School of Fashion Design, Maria launched her label ‘Maria B’ in Lahore in March 1999. Shortly after the fashion show, she opened her new boutique located in the Defense neighborhood. Her cotton shalwar kameez and embroidered evening dresses, all carefully cut and stitched, were quickly picked up by trendy Lahoris.

1. What designers do you enjoy wearing and why?
I love Calvin Klein, Armani and Nicole Furhi – not that I am a couture dress of their own, but as it is, I’m even in love with Their pret-a-porter. In their work one sees the cleanest lines, the simplest of explanations, and yet the look is chic and modern great.

2. How would you dress for:
A) A lecture you are invited to deliver at the Pakistan School of Fashion and Design: A simple clean-cut trouser Kameez.
B) A lazy day at home: shorts and T-shirt.
C) A Job Interview: High heels, strong silhouette, dark glasses framing my face, a black briefcase and Bruno probably a trouser kameez, which is bold but subdued.
D) A fashion show that you coordinate: Black! Feathers, patent leather, chiffon and still Etos.
3. Where do you get your hair cut off?
Ali-Tehseen and Maggi at Lillies.

4. How do you wear your hair? What you can do with straight hair.
I usually let my hair loose.

5. On average, how much time you spend dress?
Barely in time. Effort wise – a little.

6. Tell us about your shoe collection?
Do not get me started just thinking about shoes gives me a high! I have a fettish for shoes that goes beyond reason and understanding.

7. What accessories will probably go to your grave with you?
Did I mention my fettish for shoes?

8. What colors do you look best on you?
Fully depends on my mood I love all colors, so I have no inhibitions about one.

9. Which person dead or alive you feel the look of the previous millennium defined?
Coco Chanel for changing the face of women’s fashion, no one comes even remotely close to her. She changed the whole concept of feminism through the introduction of trousers, jacket fits Women’s Wear. She only shook the shackles of cumbersome female fashion.

10. The perfume that you define:
24 FOUBOURG by Hermes.

11. The most valuable asset in your wardrobe?
A coat and turtle neck shirt fits by Celine.

12. The only thing you would never be caught dead in?
A heavily embroidered Jora in 12 colors with a loose kurta and shalwar.

13. The accessories you always have with you?
Gucci glasses, slippers and a DKNY bag Bally.

14. You like to see: a) radical b) smart c) a woman-of-town d) sophisticated e) cute.

15. The only photographers would you ever be?
Ather Shazad, and Usman Saeed Khawar Riaz.

16. You’ve gotten some big money on your wardrobe. What label is the first that will grab?
Prada, Georgio Armani and Christian Dior.

17. The one piece that you keep buying even if you have more than enough the same in your wardrobe?
Dress shoes. What else!

18. Do you enjoy designing clothes for yourself?
I think that by wearing my own creations I am doing justice to a designer. So I actually wear the clothes I design for my boutiques.

19. Occurs in the fashion industry puts extra pressure on you to look great all the time?
You look fabulous or work your butt off you can not have it both ways I tried, but inevitably failed!

20. Describe the wildest costume you ever wore. When do you wear?
I do not want designer clothes I design creative clothing. With wildness, you get less and wearibility portability is key. I can not remember ever wanted to wear clothes.

21. Figuratively speaking, you feel you have unfortunately not:

A twisted mind

23. Have you ever seen an impulse to go out and do something completely outrageous when Pierce your navel or maybe a tattoo or dye your hair purple experience? and later?
I have many impulses shameful, but I’ve never followed them through (except my wedding) – and so far I much regret that one.

24. Which local fashion publications are a must read for you?
Visage and rubbed

25. Which international fashion publications are a must read for you?
Vogue Vogue and many more!

26. If you could wish one of the designers living dead just long enough to design you an outfit, who would it be? What kind of outfit would you ask him / her to design for you? Why?
It should Versace, and I would ask him to go wild with inspiration from the ocean and designing a gown for me.
